Roseau 8, Thief River Falls 6
The Roseau Stripes team
had their last game of the season. About 2 minutes into
the first period Kayla Santl makes a nice pass from behind the net to an eagerly
awaiting
Ella Helgeson who quickly shoots it past the goaltender. Three minutes later a
penalty is
called against TRF. It took ten seconds for Roseau’s Madicyn Holmgren to score
a power
play goal to give Roseau a 2-0 lead. TRF scored their first goal with a minute
left in the
first period. Roseau’s Brooke Zagone answered back and scores a goal with only
36
seconds remaining in the first period to give Roseau a 3-1 lead.
In the second period,
Thief River Falls player, Khloe Lund, scored five goals of
which three came in the last minute of the second period. She is a very
talented player for
a young second grader. Another very talented player, Roseau’s Ella Helgeson,
took a shot
on goal and hit the goalpost. Ella then got her own rebound and scored her
second goal
of the game. Two minutes later Ashley Skoglund took advantage of the referee
not blowing
the whistle when the goaltender covered the puck and was able to poke the puck
in for a
goal. Roseau’s final goal of the game was scored by Paetyn Spilde with the
assist going to
Ella Helgeson. The second period ended in a 6-6 tie!
Ella Helgeson came out
strong and scored her third goal of the game in the first
minute of the third period. Madicyn Holmgren scored her second goal of the game
at the six
minute mark to give Roseau an 8-6 lead.
It has been a great
season! All of the girls have improved so much! The older girls
will travel to Fargo this weekend for a jamboree which will conclude their
season.

Roseau White 8, Warroad 0
The younger girls had a
busy fun weekend in Grand Rapids on Friday and Saturday
and were ready to play Warroad on Sunday. Jaci Rugland scored the only goal in
the first
period. In the 2nd period, Kayla Santl scored a goal, unassisted.
Also, Amy Wensloff scored
a goal with the assist going to Anika Stoskopf. The 2nd period ended
with Roseau in the
lead 3-0. The following girls scored in the 3rd period: Kayla
Santl(Jordyn Bergstrom), Olivia
Urness, Alix Howe scored two goals, and Kayla Santl(Jordyn Bergstrom). Rylie
Bjerklie did
a great job in net!
The younger girls had a great weekend winning all 3 games with a
score of 8-0!
Unfortunately, for some of the girls it was their last game of the season. The
younger girls
have made lots of progress this year and I am sure they will have a strong team
next year.
They will have a solid goaltender with Rylie Bjerklie in net and many girls who
can score
goals.
The Roseau Stripes team will play their last game of the season on
Saturday,
February 27 at the North Rink at 2:00.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2010
Roseau Green 6, Grand Rapids 1 (Older girls)
The girls were still on
an adrenaline high from beating the older and bigger Grand
Rapids team the night before. The girls were ready to play when they dropped
the puck
at 10:30. Ella Helgeson made a nice pass to Jodi Ostroski who put the puck past
the
Grand Rapids goalie.
The second period started with Ella Helgeson scoring a goal with the
assist going
to Jodi Ostroski. A little later Paetyn Spilde scored a goal with an assist
from Ella
Helgeson. At the five minute mark, Ella Helgeson scored her second goal of the
game to
give Roseau a 4-0 lead at the end of the second period.
The third period started off with Paetyn Spilde and Madicyn Holmgren
sharing a
goal as they both had their sticks on the puck as they shot it into the net.
Approximately
ten seconds later, Ella Helgeson scored her third goal of the game. Once again
Roseau
played a solid defensive game with the help of Katelyn Kofstad, Ellie Hedlund,
Kiana Flaig,
and Alix Howe. Roseau goaltender, Kenzie Giese, also did a great job in net!
Roseau White 8, Grand Rapids 0 (Younger girls)
The following girls
scored goals: Both Kayla Santl and Anika Stoskopf scored hat
tricks in this game. Brooke Zagone scored two goals and Jaci Rugland had an
assist.
Once again Rylie Bjerklie earned the shutout.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2010
Roseau Green 6, Grand Rapids 2 (Older girls)
The nine oldest girls
played against the Grand Rapids 10U B team. Luckily, the girls
were not intimidated by the size of the older Grand Rapids girls. Roseau
started the game
by playing very strong. They had lots of scoring opportunities the first five
minutes of the
game but couldn’t put the puck in the net. Halfway through the first period
Grand Rapids
scored their first goal. Roseau answered back with a goal from Ashley Skoglund
assisted
by Madicyn Holmgren. A minute later Ashley Skoglund scored her second goal,
unassisted.
The 1st period ended with Roseau in the lead 2-1.
The Roseau girls came out strong at the beginning of the 2nd
period also. Jodi
Ostroksi and Ella Helgeson both scored goals in the first minute of play to give
Roseau a
4-1 lead.
In the 3rd period Ellie Hedlund took a shot from the blue
line and scored a goal. Paetyn
Spilde also scored a goal with the assist going to Madicyn Holmgren. Katelyn
Kofstad, Ellie
Hedlund, and Kiana Flaig did an awesome job playing defense the whole game.
They did a
great job keeping the puck in the offensive zone and were able to quickly shut
down any
rushes the Grand Rapids players made into our zone. Roseau goaltender, Kenzie
Giese, did
a great job in net also.

Roseau 6, Thief River Falls 5
On Valentine’s Day, the
Roseau Stripes team traveled to Thief River Falls and
had the opportunity to play in the beautiful Ralph Engelstad Arena. The girls
were
amazed by the nice locker room accommodations. The TRF team showed up with
only 8 of their 12 players which would be to our advantage later in the game.
Thief
River Falls’ leading scorer, Khloe Lund, scored the first goal two minutes into
the first
period. Three minutes later Roseau sets up a nice play when Ella Helgeson
passes
the puck to Kayla Santl who caught the puck on her backhand and shot it past the
TRF goalie. Three minutes later, TRF’s Khloe Lund scores again. Once again
Roseau
answers back. Ella Helgeson and Kayla Santl team up again except this time Ella
scores the goal and Kayla gets the assist with only seven seconds remaining in
the 1st
period. The game is tied 2-2.
Thief River Falls comes out strong at the start of the 2nd
period and scores a goal
within the first 30 seconds. Ellie Hedlund scores Roseau’s next goal half way
through
the 2nd period to tie the game 3-3. Unfortunately, TRF scores the
next goal and the
period ends with TRF in the lead 4-3.
Roseau’s depth of having fifteen players against the Thief River
Falls eight players
was starting to show during the 3rd period. A minute and half into
the period Ashley
Skoglund scored a goal to tie the game 4-4. Five minutes later Ella Helgeson
scores her
second goal with the assist going to Kayla Santl. Roseau was in the lead for
the first time
in the game. Four minutes later Brooke Zagone put a shot on net and followed
the
rebound to get the goal. Roseau had a nice 6-4 lead with a couple of minutes
left in the
game. However, the Thief River Falls girls didn’t give up. With a minute left
in the game
Thief River Falls player, Khloe Lund, made a rush down the ice and scored a goal
to
narrow our lead by one goal. Again with only 20 seconds left in the game, Khloe
Lund
made another rush down the ice but came up empty. Roseau goaltender, Kenzie
Giese,
did a great job in net!

Roseau Sugar 7, Fargo Maroon 8
The Roseau 8U girls team
was split into two equal teams, Sugar & Spice, according
to age and skill when the Fargo Maroon and Navy teams traveled to Roseau. The
Roseau
Sugar team had the following older girls on the team: Madicyn Holmgren, Maddie
Nix,
Ashley Skoglund, Paetyn Spilde, and goaltender Kenzie Giese. The following
younger girls
were on the team: Avery Halvorson, Alix Howe, Jaci Rugland, Kayla Santl, Anika
Stoskopf,
Jasmine Verbout and Brooke Zagone.
Roseau got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Anika Stoskopf.
Fargo Maroon
answered back with four more goals to end the 1st period with a score
of 4-1.
Roseau started off the 2nd period with two goals from
Madicyn Holmgren. Anika
Stoskopf also scored a goal with an assist from Kayla Santl. The game was now
tied 4-4.
Once again Fargo answered back and scored two more goals. Roseau’s Maddie Nix
scored
a goal and Fargo scored one more goal to end the 2nd period with
Fargo in the lead 7-5.
Roseau
started out the 3rd period with a goal from Ashley Skoglund. A
little later Fargo
scored a goal to take an 8-6 lead in the game. However, Roseau didn’t give up.
Madicyn
Holmgren scored her third goal of the game and closed the gap to just one goal
behind Fargo.
Unfortunately, time ran out on the clock for the Roseau girls. It was a hard
fought battle and a
very fun, exciting game to watch.
Roseau Spice 2, Fargo Navy 6
The Roseau
8U Spice team had the following older girls on the team: Kiana Flaig, Ellie
Hedlund, Ella Helgeson, Katelyn Kofstad, and Jodi Ostroski. The following six
younger girls
rounded out the Spice team: Jordyn Bergstrom, Kallie Byfuglien, Gracie Drown,
Kilah
LaPlante, Olivia Urness, Amy Wensloff, and goaltender, Rylie Bjerklie. The
Spice team faced
a very tough Fargo Navy team. About one minute into the game Fargo scored their
first goal.
Fargo Navy did a great job holding Roseau to one shot on goal in the first
period.
In the second
period, Fargo Navy scores two more goals to make it 3-0. Halfway
through the 2nd period, Roseau’s Ella Helgeson scored a goal to get
the girls back in the
game.
Fargo Navy scored
three more goals in the 3rd period to make it a 6-1 game. With about
10 seconds left in the game, Jodi Ostroski passed the puck up to Ella Helgeson
who skated
down the ice and scored Roseau’s second goal. Roseau goaltender, Rylie Bjerklie,
did a
good job in net and made some great saves!
Roseau Sugar 6, Fargo Navy 5(shootout)
The Roseau girls rested
for a couple of hours and then played the other Fargo team,
Fargo Navy. Fargo scored the first goal of the game. Soon after, Roseau’s
Brooke Zagone
and Jaci Rugland each scored a goal for Roseau. The 1st period ended
with Roseau Sugar
in the lead 2-1.
Fargo Navy scored a goal in the second period which tied up the game
2-2. Ashley
Skoglund scored the next goal to give Roseau the lead at the end of the 2nd
period.
The Fargo Navy team came out very strong in the third period and
scored two goals
to take the lead in the game 4-3. Alix Howe scored the next goal with an assist
from Ashley
Skoglund which tied the game 4-4. Fargo scored the next goal. Ashley Skoglund
answered
back with her second goal of the game. The third period ended with a 5-5 tie.
The coaches
agreed to have a three player shootout. Roseau’s first sharp shooter was Anika
Stoskopf
who did a great job shooting the puck in the net. Next, it was Fargo’s turn.
Roseau
goaltender, Kenzie Giese, did a great job shutting down Fargo’s first shooter.
Roseau’s next
sharp shooter was Madicyn Holmgren who also did a super job scoring on the Fargo
goaltender. There was a lot of pressure on Roseau’s goaltender, Kenzie Giese,
at this point
because she knew if she stopped Fargo’s next shooter the Roseau girls would win
the game.
Kenzie Giese came up big and stopped the Fargo shooter! Another very exciting
game!
Roseau Spice 8, Fargo Maroon 8
Ella
Helgeson added lots of spice to the Spice team when the Roseau girls played
Fargo Maroon as Ella scored five goals and had one assist. The 1st
period started out kind
of rough for the Spice team as Fargo scored three goals in the first ten minutes
of play. At
the five minute mark Ella Helgeson scored Roseau’s first goal with the assist
going to Jodi
Ostroski. With about a minute left in the period Ella Helgeson scored another
goal. The 1st
period ended with the Roseau girls down one goal with a score of 2-3.
About 30
seconds into the 2nd period Ella Helgeson passed the puck to Olivia
Urness
who skated behind the Fargo net to get a nice wrap around goal which tied the
game at 3-3.
Fargo Maroon answered back with two more goals to take the lead again. At the 4
minute
mark, Ella Helgeson gets an open break away to score her third goal of the
game. About 20
seconds later Jodi Ostroski scored a goal to tie up the game 5-5. With a minute
remaining
in the 2nd period, Ella Helgeson gets another open breakaway and
scored a goal to give
Roseau a 6-5 lead in the game.
The Fargo Maroon team
scored a goal within the first minute and a half of the third
period to tie up the game again. A couple of minutes later, Ellie Hedlund took
a shot from
the blue line to score Roseau’s 7th goal. A little later Ella
Helgeson scored her fifth goal of
the game to give Roseau an 8-6 lead. Ten seconds later Fargo scored a goal.
Roseau had
an 8-7 lead with about two minutes left in the game. The Fargo Maroon team
pulled their
goalie so they could put an extra skater on the ice. About twenty seconds later
Fargo
Maroon scored a goal to tie the game! The coaches from both teams decided to
call it a tie.
It was a very exciting game!
Both Fargo
teams played a very good defensive game and it was great competition
for our girls. A special thank you to Karrie Rugland and Kelly Kofstad for
having an ice
cream social for all the girls after the Saturday afternoon game.

Roseau 14, Grand Forks Angels 2
Three weeks ago the ten oldest 8U
girls played the Grand Forks Angels in a very
exciting close game. Unfortunately, this game turned out to be a little
lopsided
because the Grand Forks Angels weren’t playing with their regular goalie. Coach
LeEarl Rugland continues to rotate the girls at different positions each game.
The
majority of the girls like to play either center or wing position because of the
scoring
opportunities. Roseau’s Kiana Flaig has played the position of defense for most
of
the year. However, she got the opportunity to play center on Sunday and did a
great
job as she scored two goals and has two assists. Ellie Hedlund also has spent a
lot
of time playing defense so it was a nice change to see her playing in the wing
position. Ellie worked hard and made some nice passes that got her three
assists
during the game. Ellie also scored two unassisted goals. Ella Helgeson and
Ashley
Skoglund have done a fine job as forwards this year on the team. Ella scored a
hat
trick and Ashley also scored a hat trick with an assist. Jaci Rugland scored
two goals
while Maddie Nix and Jodi Ostroski each scored one goal. Goaltender, Kenzie
Giese,
played a strong game and only allowed two goals.
On Saturday, February 6, the
thirteen youngest girls travel to Bagley for a game at 1:45.
The next home game for all the girls is Saturday, February 13, at the Ram Center
and
North Rink, against Fargo Maroon and Fargo Navy.

Roseau 5, Thief River Falls 9
The Roseau 8U Stars team was anxious
and excited to play Thief River Falls again.
This time our girls hoped to come out on the winning end against the team that
ruined our perfect record. Unfortunately, Thief River Fall’s top player, Khloe
Lund,
was in fine form. Khloe scored four goals on open breakaways in the first
period to
give Thief River Falls a 4-0 lead by the end of the first period.
At the beginning of the second period the Roseau girls were still flustered as
to how
they were going to stop the very talented Khloe Lund from scoring more goals.
Khloe
Lund scored two more goals on open breakaways in the first two minutes of the
second period to give TRF a 6-0 lead. Roseau wasn’t going to give up though.
All of
Ella Helgeson’s hard work scrapping for the puck finally paid off. She got the
puck
and passed it to Jodi Ostroski who found the net to put the Roseau girls on the
board!
Shortly after Roseau’s goal, TRF answers back with a goal for a 7-1 lead. Once
again
Roseau fights back and Jaci Rugland scores a goal with an assist from Ashley
Skoglund. Then Ella Helgeson and Jodi Ostroski team up again. This time Jodi
Ostroski makes a pass from behind the net to Ella Helgeson who put the puck in
the
net to make it a 7-3 game. The momentum of the game seemed to be with Roseau at
this point. Roseau goaltender, Kenzie Giese, was getting into her groove and
did a
great job stopping some of Khloe Lund’s open breakaway shots. TRF scored one
more
goal to end the period with a 8-3 lead.
The third period started off great with Anika Stoskopf scoring a goal,
unassisted, to
close the gap on a Thief River Falls lead. The TRF girls kept playing hard and
scored
another goal to increase their lead 9-4. However, the Roseau girls wouldn’t
give up. Ella
Helgeson kept working hard digging for the puck and scored her second goal of
the game
with an assist from Maddie Nix. The final score of the game was 9 to 5 in favor
of Thief
River Falls. Roseau’s overall record for the season is 8-2.

tough Thief River Falls team. TRF scored the first goal just eight seconds into

period
and scored three goals in the first 4 ½ minutes to take the lead 5 to 1.
Roseau’s
second goal was scored by Ashley Skoglund with an assist going to Gracie Drown.
The second period ended with TRF in the lead 5 to 2.
The third period started out with a goal from Ellie Hedlund with the assist
going to
Anika Stoskopf. TRF scored another goal in the third period to win the game
6-3.
The Roseau girls had lots of scoring opportunities but couldn’t put the puck in
the
net.
Roseau’s next game is on Sunday, January 24. The youngest 13 girls on Roseau’s
team will play Warroad at the Gardens at 1:45.
Saturday, January 9, 2010

team that consisted of six players and a goalie. The following girls scored a
goal for Roseau: Alix Howe with an assist from Kilah LaPlante; Kilah LaPlante,
unassisted; Amy Wensloff with an assist from Brooke Zagone; and Brooke

Roseau 7, Grand Forks Angels 5
On Sunday afternoon, Roseau’s oldest girls traveled to Grand Forks to play
against the Grand Forks Angels. It would be Roseau’s first game playing
without Reese Strand who moved up to the 10 Green team due to an injury
on that team. Also, Roseau’s goaltender, Kenzie Giese, could not play that
day due to illness. Luckily our other goalie, Rylie Bjerklie, was able to make
the trip to Grand Forks.
Jodi Ostroski scored the first goal
for Roseau with an assist from Paetyn Spilde.
Jaci Rugland scored the next goal with an assist from Ella Helgeson. The Grand
Forks Angels answered back and scored the next two goals to tie the game at
2-2.
The second period consisted of back
and forth scoring between Roseau and
Grand Forks which made it a very fun period of hockey. Grand Forks started the
second period by scoring their third goal of the game. Roseau answered back
with a goal from Jaci Rugland and an assist from Madicyn Holmgren to tie up the
game. Grand Forks battled back and scored the next goal to take the lead 4-3.
Once again, Roseau answered back with a goal from Madicyn Holmgren on a pass
from Ella Helgeson to tie up the game. A few minutes later, Madicyn Holmgren
scored again, unassisted, to put the Roseau girls in the lead 5-4 to end out the
second period.
In the third period both teams had power play opportunities as Roseau was called
for one penalty and Grand Forks for three penalties. Grand Forks tied the game
in
the third period on a short-handed goal. Once again, Roseau fought back and
Ashely Skoglund scored a goal, unassisted, to put the Roseau girls back in the
lead 6-5. With a couple of minutes remaining in the game, Roseau’s Maddie Nix
scored a goal, unassisted, to make the final score 7-5.
Saturday, January 2, 2010
Roseau 11, Warroad 0
The Roseau 8U stripes team played Warroad again at the Ram Center on Saturday.
There were 14 Roseau girls on the stripes team and 6 girls on the Warroad team.
The coaches from both teams thought it would be good if the number of girls on
each team was even. Therefore, each period four different Roseau girls put on
Warroad jerseys and skated on the Warroad team.
Nevertheless, Roseau still came out
on top. Roseau’s Alix Howe and Paetyn Spilde
both scored two goals each. The following girls scored one goal: Kiana Flaig,
Ellie
Hedlund, Ella Helgeson, Kilah LaPlante, Ashley Skoglund, and Jasmine Verbout.
Maddie Nix also scored a goal with the assist going to Brooke Zagone.
Kenzie Giese and Rylie Bjerklie shared the goaltending for Roseau.
The Roseau girls will be playing
their next game on Saturday, January 9th, at the Ram
Center against Bagley. The youngest 13 girls on Roseau’s team will be playing
next
Saturday.
Sunday, December 13, 2009
Roseau 19, Warroad 1
On Sunday, December 13, the Roseau Girls 8U Stars team played a very young
Warroad team of 10 girls. In contrast, the Roseau 8U girls team has 23 players
and 2 goalies this year. As a result, the coaches have decided to split up the
girls
into smaller teams within the 8U team. The oldest ten girls and goalie that
move up
to 10U next year will play in all the games while the other younger13 girls and
goalie
are split up and play every other game with the older girls except for the Grand
Forks and Fargo Jamborees.
Scoring two goals each for Roseau included Jodi Ostroski, Kiana Flaig and
Kaitlyn
Kofstad. Both Anika Stoskpf and Jaci Rugland also scored two goals each with
one
assist. The following girls scored one goal: Ella Helgeson, Avery Halverson,
Ellie
Hedlund, Paetyn Spilde, Gracie Drown, Kallie Byfuglien, Amy Wensloff, Jordyn
Bergstrom, and Reese Strand with a goal and an assist.
Roseau goalies Kenzie Giese and Rylie Bjerklie split the goaltending for the
game.

team at the Ram Center at noon.

| Roseau 17, West Fargo 2 | |
| On Friday, December 4, the girls traveled to Grand Forks to participate in the Grand Forks Angels Holiday Hockey Tournament. In their first game Roseau played against West Fargo. The coaches, players, referees, and spectators were surprised to see that both the Roseau and West Fargo teams were wearing the same dark green hockey jerseys! Roseau coach LeEarl Rugland took the bull by the horns and started asking the tournament officials if they had any “beanie pullovers.” Luckily they found some yellow pullovers so the Roseau girls put them on and the game started. | |
| Only a minute into the first period and West Fargo scored their first goal. It wasn’t long after the West Fargo goal that Jodi Ostroski scored her first goal with an assist from Madicyn Holmgren. A minute later Maddie Nix scored her first goal with an assist from Reese Strand. Roseau’s third and fourth goals were scored by Reese Strand unassisted. | |
| Half way through the first period Jodi Ostroski scored her second goal, unassisted. Madicyn Holmgren scored the next two goals, unassisted for a 7-1 lead. | The Thief River girls fought back in the second period scoring their next two goals in the first five minutes to tie up the game 3-3. The second period ended and the score was still tied 3-3 so the girls played a six minute overtime period which was scoreless. Finally, the game would be decided on a three player shootout. Reese Strand came up big and scored the only goal as did Kenzie Giese for stopping all three shots from the Thief River players. | |
| The Roseau goalie, Kenzie Giese, stopped 5 of the 8 shots on net. The Thief River goalie stopped 20 of the 24 shots on net. | |
| Later that evening the girls were treated to a special evening of watching the North Dakota Women’s Sioux hockey team play Bemidji State University at the Ralph Englestad Arena. Roseau’s goalie, Kenzie Giese, had an experience of a lifetime as she got to ride on the zamboni while they resurfaced the ice between the second and third periods! After the game all the girls and their parents went to the weight room/treadmill room to watch the girls cool down. The girls also got to meet Mary Loken and some of the other Sioux players and have them autograph their tournament t-shirts. The excitement didn’t end there as Mary Loken took the girls on a tour of the Sioux girl’s locker room. All the girls had a great time at the Ralph! | |
